One of the things that surprises most people in terms of gaming is seeing how video game franchises can be spun off into different core genres. Mario is a great example of this, as is Final Fantasy, however, one of the greatest examples of this is the Warhammer universe. This tabletop gaming title made the jump to video games and it hasn’t looked back since. This universe is so massive (both in terms of gaming and tabletop) that it actually fills up two parallel universes. One in the fantasy realm, and one in sci-fi.
So, that begs the question: Why doesn’t Warhammer have an MMORPG? To be clear, there used to be one, it was called Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, but it got shut down. We think this shouldn’t discourage people from trying to make another MMORPG for it, rather, use it and recent games as an inspiration to make another attempt.
Now, to be clear, we feel that the fantasy Warhammer universe is the one that should get the MMORPG. The 40K could get one too, but that’s another piece entirely.
So, why an MMORPG? Or more accurately, why another? Well, the franchise is very popular right now, especially with the arrival of Total War: Warhammer II. The game that puts the entire universe (more-or-less) into a giant RTS title. The game is getting rave reviews from both critics and players alike, and having grand battles featuring these familiar and unique races is a perfect reason for it to go MMORPG.
You could be a human, a High Elf, a Dark Elf, a Lizardman, a Skaven, and much more. And to add to the fun, the world you inhabit could be one that is custom made for the MMORPG, while maintaining certain key cities and areas for nostalgia. Imagine working side-by-side with your fellow players to stymie attacks by foes? Or being part of grand-scale wars? This is what an MMORPG in the Warhammer universe can bring.\
