External Graphics cards, otherwise known as “eGPU” has been a novel concept back in the day. The idea is to give more power to the existing laptop or PC by hooking up an external graphics card into the unit. Despite the many ideas, only a few of them were in mass production.
Razer Core is one of the first to hit the market and although it was a fully functional eGPU, it can only support the Razer Blade gaming laptops (yes, it can support other laptops, but it is a bit wonky at the moment).
That being said, a group of students wanted to create an eGPU, but their novel idea needs some cash. So, they started a Kickstarter campaign in which a lot of people have donated. Thus, the Wolfe eGPU was born.
The Wolfe makes use of a Thunderbolt connection that has allows a lot of bandwidth to ensure that it can give enough graphical power to the laptop. There are two Wolfe eGPUs: one fitted with the Nvidia GTX 950 and one with the Nvidia GTX 970 (Wolfe Pro).
In this article, I will talk about the Wolfe.
The Wolfe is a pretty simple eGPU enclosure, but unlike other eGPUs on the market, there is already a graphics card installed in it. As previously mentioned, it comes with the Nvidia GTX 950 graphics card which is an entry-level graphics card by today’s standards.
To power the graphics card, the Wolfe comes with a 220-watt power supply which is more than enough for this GPU as it is one of the most power-efficient cards on the market. But, given that this is just an entry-level graphics card, it may put off people who really want to give that extra oomph to their laptops.
In spite of this fact, what makes the Wolfe appealing is that it is one of the only few eGPUs that can fully support the Mac laptops. Given that you’ve updated the laptop’s Thunderbolt firmware, the Wolfe will have no problems being detected by the system.
On the front of the enclosure, you will find a decal that look’s like a wolf’s paw and at the top of the chassis, you will find a vent to exhaust the hot air that the GPU produces. What people will love about the Wolfe is its pretty compact with dimensions of 7.85in x 5.41in x 2.64in. This makes it very portable and you can bring it with you when you’re going to bring your Mac laptop.
Setup is very, very easy. All you need to do is make sure that your Macbook or laptop has the latest Thunderbolt firmware installed. After that, just hook up the included Thunderbolt cable, plug it into the eGPU and then finally plug it into your Macbook or laptop. It’s that simple!
This is the most questionable part. The Nvidia GTX 950 that comes pre-installed with the Wolfe is an entry-level GPU. Yes, it can provide a boost to the graphics processing unit inside of a Macbook, but you will only see little improvement.
If you want a beefier graphics card, you can opt for the Wolfe Pro that comes with the GTX 970. At its release, the GTX 970 performs admirably well and it is also power-efficient as well. The Wolfe, although pretty good in its concept, just falls short when it comes to amplifying the graphical prowess of an existing Macbook or laptop.
The Wolfe is a very portable eGPU enclosure with simple aesthetics and a very easy to setup interface. All you need to do is get a Macbook or a laptop with a Thunderbolt connection and you should be good to go.
In today’s standards, the GTX 950 just won’t give you that extra kick when it comes to graphical performance. If the company would update the graphics cards to accommodate the newer Pascal Graphics cards from Nvidia, that would be great!
