One of the best things about Star Wars is that the game is so rich in lore and history that just about any kind of video game it wants to be…it can be. And more importantly, it can be good…most of the time. It’s been epic RPGs via Knights of the Old Republic. It became a highly anticipated MMORPG via The Old Republic. It’s had space shooters like Rogue Squadron, racing titles like Podracer, shooters via Battlefront and much more. But, one thing that hasn’t been done…is a MOBA.
Now, technically, there “is” a Star Wars MOBA, it’s called Star Wars Force Arena. The quotations are for the fact that it’s not called a MOBA, it just acts like one. But, that game has you commanding a squadron of heroes or villains, whereas MOBAs are about you picking one character and teaming up with other people (or bots) to fight. So, can there be a Star Wars game like that?
Don’t believe me? Look at Heroes of the Storm! That game is just an amalgamation of the various Blizzard franchises crammed together into one title, so why shouldn’t it be reasonable that Star Wars can do the same? If anything, they could do a spin on it.
How so? Well, imagine instead of one amalgamation like HOTS, they did three distinct eras? Each with its own feel, terrain, and characters. I speak of course of the Prequels, Original films, and the New Trilogy. With each film trilogy comes unique battles from which to draw inspiration from, and new planets that could be made exclusively for those distinct eras. It would make it open to fans of all genres to play in their favorites.
And yes, of course, there would be a mode that would bring all three together, but this way, there’d be more options. Plus, that’s literally the tip of the iceberg in terms of what they could do! The only thing that could hold it back is the developer that would make the game!
So, hire the right team, and a Star Wars MOBA would be an instant hit.
