The long-awaited Skill Pets update is finally live on Runescape 3 servers! A total of 19 Skill Pets have been added to the game, one for each non-combat skill. Free-to-play players can obtain Skill Pets, but only for non-members’ exclusive skills.
To receive a pet, players simply have to train their skills using the eligible training methods. The list of acceptable training methods for each Skill Pet can be found on the Runescape 3 update post regarding Skill Pets. The common ways to train each skill are included in that list, so there isn’t a need to change your behaviors.
Skill Pets are incredibly rare, and have a random chance of dropping. The chance to receive a certain pet increases with your level in its respective skill. The probability to acquire a pet while performing gathering (ex. Mining and Woodcutting) and production (Ex. Smithing and Cooking) skills are calculated differently.
For gathering skills, the level of the resource you’re obtaining does not affect your chances at receiving a pet; however, the chance to get a pet while training a production skill is influenced by the amount of experience points you’re receiving. For example, carving Magic Shortbows would yield a higher chance at receiving the Fletching Skill Pet compared to carving Yew Shortbows. This is because Magic Shortbows give more experience points than Yew Shortbows.
It’s worth noting that performing skills while Dungeoneering will NOT yield a chance at obtaining a Skill Pet. In other words, it’s only possible to get the Dungeoneering Skill Pet while training the Dungeoneering skill.
The pets themselves have “unique animations for spawning, de-spawning, attacking, defending, and special attacks”. They can also serve as familiar overrides.
If a player is fortunate enough to gather at least five Skill Pets, they will unlock the ‘Jack of Trades’ title. Furthermore, if a player manages to unlock all 19 Skill Pets, they will be awarded with the golden title: ‘Jack of All Trades’.
What are you waiting for? Stock up on coffee because it’s time to ‘Catch ‘Em All’!
