When it comes to video games, we all want the same things. Right? To have an enjoyable experience. Whether that be through a story that weaves a powerful narrative, gameplay that is engaging and fun, or just hoping online and battling it out with our friends. We want to have fun, right? But, there’s a line that need to be observed in order to not go from fun, to mean, to bullying. And for one player in Overwatch, he thinks someones “fun” is going WAY over the line.
Twitch streamer IDDQD has been accused of “smurfing” by members of the Overwatch community, on a thread that has since been removed. For those unfamiliar with the term, Overwatch smurfing is where a seasoned player will intentionally create a new account on a game in order to be placed among lower ranked players, in order to achieve high kill rates and so on.
The streamer in question is no stranger to Overwatch, and streams his games on Twitch and Youtube. Which itself is not a crime, nor something to be frowned upon. However, what he does in the Overwatch matches is something else entirely – it’s called Overwatch smurfing. Whatch the video below to find out what might get the Twitch streamer banned.
Did you catch it? From the video, it appears as though IDDQ6 is WAY above the skill level of the Overwatch players he’s fighting. In fact, he’s apparently throwing ranked matches so that he can go into servers that have been designated for “lower-tier players”, and then completely crushing them, seemingly just for his and his fans amusement.
The Overwatch community is not happy about this and wants the Twitch streamer banned. Because to them, and many, many others, this is a violation of not only the game itself (and the unspoken rules), but also, the “unsportsmanlike” rules that Blizzard has set. For Battle.net user nep, he’s asking for the maximum punishment, and he’s not alone if you read the comments on the Youtube video page.
He believes this players should be permanently banned from streaming Overwatch, as their name was revealed in the Stream, and thus can now happen. To nep, this player deserves it, for while their crimes aren’t technically “crimes” when viewed by the letter of the law, they are crimes when you observe the spirit of the law.
So should IDDQD be banned? It’s a hot topic issue, and not all members of the Overwatch community is on board. Some think that these players who want the ban are being childish, or are angry for no reason. While the other side also has fair points. You’re put in certain servers because of your skill level. So you expect to fight those in your level, this guy is abusing that by faking his skill in order to basically troll others.
The truth of the matter is, the only people who can decide whether this guy is banned is Blizzard. They’re going to have to look hard into the matter, and their own rules and guidelines to see whether any punishment is called for here, regardless of what the Overwatch community thinks.
