In case you didn’t know, Blizzard’s popular MMORPG World of Warcraft was not created on the basis of a new world. Rather, it was inspired by the world that Blizzard created in a trio of real-time strategy games called Warcraft. First came Orcs & Humans, then Tides of Darkness, and then finally Reign of Chaos. It was the popularity of these games that lead to the rise of World of Warcraft. In fact, it was released 2 years after the final game in the RTS trilogy.
Since then, World of Warcraft has become one of the longest lasting and most popular MMORPGs in the world, and so any thoughts of a return to the RTS series seems unlikely. But that doesn’t mean fans don’t want it. In fact, some are wondering if the RTS and MMORPG games could actually co-exist. Says one Battle.Net user:
“Is it possible to somehow continue the warcraft lore having brand new rts game and wow still going with new expansions?” asks player Acnapyx.
It is an intriguing idea, and one that could bring life back into the MMORPG, as it’s been getting berated by fans a lot recently. Plus, the RTS format is much different than an MMORPG, so if done right it would feel like a breath of fresh air. Not to mention an RTS has a more focused story, so it can deliver a very deep narrative that isn’t dependent on multiple players, but rather, just one person.
A lot of players are behind the idea, as they’d love to see the return of Warcraft, but, some are skeptical that Blizzard would be willing to do that based on their most recent releases:
“All loot-crate based monetization systems. I doubt you’ll see any future games from Blizzard (aside from WoW expansions but WoW already has plenty of microtransactions) that don’t follow a similar path,” says player ßerniesandrs.
It is a good point, as monetization is one of Blizzard’s big things. However, it may not be impossible. One player revealed that Blizzard has talked about Warcraft 4 and how it could potentially be made. So if Blizzard is talking about it, there is hope.
