Macbooks are often left behind by laptops that can be fitted with the latest and greatest GPUs. A lot of people do use Macbooks, but they often only use them for productivity purposes. But, what if you want to use your Macbook for games?
Well, if you want to improve the graphical performance of your Macbook, then you may want to get the BizonBOX 2. This is an eGPU enclosure that has everything you need to further improve the graphical prowess of your Macbook. But, is the BizonBOX 2 worth it? You will find out in this article.
Review of BizonBOX 2
The BizonBOX 2 looks a lot like a mini PC. It is rectangular in shape and comes with a plethora of vents to help dissipate heat that is produced by the graphics card. At the back of the unit, you will find two Thunderbolt 3 ports and a power connector. To power this eGPU, the company gives you a Dell power brick which is a bit bulky. This means that the BizonBOX 2 is by no means a portable eGPU; so you can only use this if you put your Macbook on a desk.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding the BizonBOX 2 in that the company just made use of an Akitio Thunder 2 chassis. Although the company didn’t deny it, they said that they made some improvements so that they can fit much larger graphics cards inside.
Anyway, the BizonBOX 2 is much like any other custom gamepad; you can actually order it with the graphics card already installed. As of the time of writing this article, you can choose between any of these video cards: Nvidia GTX 970, GTX Titan X, GTX 980Ti, GTX 1060, GTX 1070, GTX 1080, GTX 1080Ti, and the new GTX Titan X Pascal.
Once you’ve chosen your desired graphics card, you will then select the power supply. You can select a 200-watt power supply or you can select the “enhanced” 400-watt power supply. In most cases, the 200-watt power supply should be enough. But, if you’re going to use the GTX 1080 and above, you may want to opt for the 400-watt power supply as it gives more juice.
The BizonBOX 2 makes use of a Thunderbolt connector and if you’re not going to pay an extra premium for a much lengthy cable, the company will only supply you with a 0.5m cable. For the most part, the supplied free cable is actually enough. But, if you do not want to have the eGPU close to you, you need to pay an additional $49.
Performance-wise, the BizonBOX 2 is actually pretty awesome. Remember that the most inexpensive option from the list is a GTX 970, which in its prime, is one of the best cost-effective graphics cards. It performs really well and it is actually pretty quiet.
Of course, performance improves dramatically the better the graphics card you want inside the chassis. As for thermals, its plethora of air vents ensures that the chassis stays cool enough to not have the card throttle.
I do have to point out that if you want to use this eGPU on a Macbook, be sure to have the Mac OS 10 (or higher) installed as this eGPU will not work with previous versions of the said OS. Furthermore, you need to have the latest Thunderbolt firmware installed to have the BizonBOX 2 recognized by the system. Also, there is a limitation on the Mac OS that the display won’t work when using an External GPU, so you will need to hook up an external monitor if you wish to use the BizonBOX 2.
Now, this is not to say that the BizonBOX 2 doesn’t work on laptops that have Windows 10 installed; it does. Again, the laptop only needs to have a Thunderbolt 3 port and the most up-to-date drivers and this eGPU should work just fine.
So, is the BizonBOX 2 any good? Absolutely. It performs admirably well with everything pre-installed. All you have to do is order the desired graphics card and power supply and they will set it all up for you. It will arrive at your doorstep and it will be ready to use immediately.
There is the controversy regarding this particular eGPU, but I guess it is just a small thing considering how well this eGPU performs. Best of all, it can work on a Macbook provided that you’ve done the necessary steps to have the drivers installed in the OS.
Probably, the only thing I will complain about is its price. The BizonBOX 2 is expensive! The most basic configuration (GTX 970+200-watt power supply) costs $349 and the next once up is $429 (GTX 1060). Price ramps up the better the graphics card gets.
Also, the performance is somewhat limited due to the bandwidth limitation of the Thunderbolt 3 port. But, given that you can get the most high-end graphics card and have it work on any Thunderbolt 3-supported laptop, this eGPU is awesome.
- A lot of GPU options
- Comes with everything pre-installed from the factory
- Awesome performance
- Controversy regarding the chassis used
