There are dangers to being a video game that is mostly or only online. Mainly, if something fails with the servers, it affects a lot of players. Thus, developers like to spread their servers out across the world so that it can cover everyone and not just certain people. However, sometimes that’s not enough, as certain Overwatch players are learning right now. It appears that the Australian and New Zealand servers are going through some severe issues, causing gameplay to become very difficult.
This reveal came from Redditer user Menttrix, who, after connecting to an Overwatch Server locations in Australian or New Zealand, noted that players were getting screwed by the servers. They were being taken from their standard ones and put into ones with much high Ping. For the record, the higher the ping, the worse your connection to the server. In some cases, Menttrix noted that he or some friends went from a 13 ping to over 200!
Making this all the worse is that Blizzard has apparently offered no explanation as to why this is happening. Another player though did send a message about this to support, and this is part of the message they got:
“Our team has noticed about the server connection issue but there is no workaround or a fix for this at the moment. Please make sure to check our forums; we will post something if we found a fix for this!”
That will not inspire confidence. And the situation goes even deeper than this, as other Redditors reported that the South American servers were suffering similar problems, making the Overwatch connection issues a problem on two different hemispheres.
Now, some players are noting that the World Cup could be the reason that this is happening, but we cannot confirm that this is the case at this time. Either way, let’s hope Overwatch servers become functional for all very soon.
