If you want to increase the power of your gaming laptop, you’re going to want to have an eGPU. An eGPU, short for “external Graphics Processing Unit” is an enclosure which can house a full desktop graphics card in it. It can then be wired into your laptop to give it some extra punch.
That being said, most eGPU enclosures only work for certain brands. For example, the Razer Core, although it can work with other non-Razer laptops, is a bit buggy on them as opposed to the company’s own line of gaming laptops. The same goes for the Alienware Graphics Amplifier as well as it can only be used on Alienware laptops.
But, what if you have a laptop that is not made by these companies? Do not worry, there is an eGPU that you can use, provided that it comes with a Thunderbolt 3.0 port. That eGPU is none other than the Asus ROG XG Station 2. Is it any good? We will find out in this article.
Asus ROG XG Station 2
Asus never fails to impress when it comes to the aesthetics and the Asus ROG XG Station 2 is no different. This eGPU enclosure has some intricate detail all over its body and it has a rather odd shape. At the top, you will find the switch which you can push to unlock the enclosure.
The inside of the XG Station 2 is quite spacious. You can house a discrete graphics card and you can even put a 2.5-inch SSD inside it as well. To power everything up, the company also included a beefy 600W power supply so even power-hungry graphics card will be satiated. To adhere to the current trends, the Asus ROG XG Station 2 also has red LEDs to further improve its aesthetics. The company went for red LEDs as it truly complements the black exterior.
The Asus ROG XG Station 2 can support graphics cards that have a maximum size of 312 x 170 x 44mm. This pretty much means that you can place even the biggest graphics cards on the market. This enclosure has dimensions of 158x 456 x 278mm. It is pretty big and it can get heavy depending on the graphics card you’re going to use.
It is important to note that the Asus ROG XG Station 2 is not only an eGPU enclosure, it can also be used as an expansion dock. As previously mentioned, the XG Station 2 can house an additional storage device and it also has a network card as well.
At the back of the device, you can see four USB 3.0 ports, a 2.5-inch bay for another storage device, and a Gigabit Ethernet port as well. You can pretty much make use of all of these features so that you don’t have to use your laptop’s ports and connectivity options.
Setting up is very easy. All you have to do is open the Asus ROG XG Station 2 by pushing the switch at the top. This will reveal the inside of the enclosure. Place your graphics card in the PCIe slot and plug the appropriate power connections. Once that is done, plug the Thunderbolt 3 cable into your laptop.
When using an eGPU, make sure that your laptop comes with up-to-date drivers. Whenever possible, update the BIOS of the laptop as well. Once you have the eGPU up and running and it is detected by your laptop, go ahead and update the drivers for your graphics card.
Once that is done, you can then enjoy the power of the Asus ROG XG Station 2!
The Asus ROG XG Station 2 is well thought of. The performance is pretty good despite the Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth throughput limitation. For the most part, it gave a noticeable increase in framerates. Keep in mind that the graphics card you’re going to use in the enclosure should be more powerful than what your current laptop is using.
There are three fans on the inside of the eGPU and it does a pretty good job of exhausting the heat that comes from the GPU. Whether you’re using a blower-style GPU or one with custom cooling, the hot air that it emits is perfectly dissipated thanks to the plethora of air vents this enclosure has.
The red LED also adds another depth of awesomeness as well. And, if you’re using a modern GPU (which most likely has some sort of LED lighting), then you’re in for an impressive light show!
The Asus ROG XG Station 2 is definitely something to consider when you’re looking to increase your laptop’s graphical prowess. For one, it is compatible with all laptops that have a Thunderbolt 3 port. Two, it has a pretty cool design and it also has some red LEDs to further complement the build. Three, the eGPU enclosure comes with a hefty 600-watt power supply which can power even the most power-hungry graphics there is. And, it is compatible with a bevy of graphics cards as well!
This eGPU enclosure is reasonably priced at $300. Seriously, if you want to pack more punch into your laptop, the Asus ROG XG Station 2 should definitely be considered.
